Vlogging While Driving: What’s the Big Deal?

Hi, this is Raychel Adiutori with Erie Insurance. Have you noticed a trend of people talking, singing – even doing crazy things like filming themselves while driving? It seems like it could be distracting but, if they mount their camera on the dashboard, like this, is that ok? In theory, it may seem safe, but what about in practice? It could be a different story. We looked around online and saw videos of influencers filming themselves while driving, looking back and forth between the camera and the road, fiddling with the camera, and in one case, actually almost swerving off the road in a “near miss.” We showed the videos to some drivers to get their take. So what’s the verdict? Safe? Or not safe? Let’s go find out from someone who knows what he’s talking about. Hi Raychel, I’m Paul Atchley. I’m a professor of psychology and I specialize in the real-world implications of multi-tasking, including distracted driving. Hi Dr. Atchley, thanks for talking with us. At Erie Insurance, we want to help people see the risks of various driving behaviors so they can make good decisions behind the wheel. Some people may do certain things in the car that may seem safe on the surface, but maybe aren’t. Case in point: What did you think of those video clips showing people vlogging while driving? Sounds great Dr. Atchley, thank you so much for your time. You’ve given us all a lot to think about! And thank you for watching. I’m going to run some errands now, but I will not be filming myself while I do. I hope you’ll think twice too about anything you’re doing in the car that might distract you. Thanks so much for watching. Bye everybody!
